Lago di Garda

This lake is very big and beautiful. The drive to Salo is very nice. A recommended stops along the way is in Sirmione at the southern tip of the lake. There are many small towns along the shore. Take your pick they are all great with their lake shore pedestrian areas, rows of cafes, restaurants and gelaterias.
We visited the west and east shores of Lago di Garda in two different occasions. On our first approach we headed to the west to the village of Salo. Very nice specialty shops in town, a clean spotless feeling to the place, almost utopic. We walked through the village and then strolled by the water with many other people. The polished mirrored surface of the lake with its grayish blue shimmer, the white sails of the boats, the mountains, the blue sky, the cityscape reflections in the water, were all stunning. Sit at one of the cafes and enjoy the view, the breeze, the drinks and people watching. On the second visit we took our bikes and biked along the path on the east side of the lake. It was late summer and it was packed. In some stretches of road it was hard to dodge all the people walking there, it may be better to bike along in the shoulder season or during the week. It was never the less a lot of fun. Most people recommend taking the ferry boat from Sirmione north to one of the villages on the east shore and then bike back along the water. We did not visit any museums but saw all the people, sunbathers, camper van lots, cabins and all the summer by the lake paraphernalia. A gelato on a table on the shores of the lake or a glass of prosecco looking at the water is a must also on this side.
The Garda region is famous for its olive oil and citric fruit, particularly lemons. The Olive oil is delicious. If going do not forget the biggest bottle you can find. A lot of the cooperatives provide tastings.
